Justin Timberlake buys MySpace

Justin Timberlake is to take a “major role” in the new direction of Myspace after he emerged as one of those behind a $35m deal for the ailing social network.

The singer turned actor, who starred as Facebook investor Sean Parker in the Hollywood hit The Social Network, took a stake in Myspace along with the online advertising company, Specific Media.

The unlikely entrepreneur will “lead the business strategy” for the fallen social network, the Specific Media chief executive Tim Vangerhook, said on announcing the $35m deal on Wednesday evening. In an interview with AdAge, Vanderhook said Timberlake, 30, had put his own money into buying Myspace, but refused to disclose how much. He confirmed that the former N Sync singer will have an office in Myspace but that he was “probably not going to be there every day”.

Timberlake said in a statement: “There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. Myspace has the potential to be that place.Art is inspired by people and vice versa, so there’s a natural social component to entertainment. I’m excited to help revitalise Myspace by using its social media platform to bring artists and fans together in one community.”

Columbo dies at 83

I remember my whole family used to watch Columbo, and his crooked eye look..

Peter Falk, the American actor famous for his role in the TV detective series Columbo, has died at the age of 83.

Falk’s lawyer said he died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home on Thursday evening. The actor had reportedly been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in Columbo, which ran from 1971 to 2003. Lieutenant Columbo became well known for his shabby raincoat and his killer catchphrase: “One more thing …”

As a child, Falk’s right eye had been surgically removed because of a malignant tumor, and was replaced with a glass eye.

But the handicap became Columbo’s physical trademark and enhanced the detective’s image as a dishevelled and oddball crime sleuth.

Missy Elliot – Graves’ disease

There is no cure for Graves’ disease, but Missy’s condition has improved over the past year.

Texas Hold’em Spiderman Style

Tobey Maguire has been dragged into a bankruptcy case … all because he’s really, really good at Texas Hold’em poker.

Tobey, Leo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon often played high-stakes, Texas Hold ‘em poker together, where tens of thousands of dollars regularly changed hands.

Tobey is being sued by the trustees in the bankruptcy case involving Brad Ruderman, who’s currently in prison for running a Ponzi scheme.  Ruderman was allegedly involved in some of these illegal, unlicensed poker games with Tobey, who came out on top to the tune of over $300,000.  The trustees feel the scheme was illegal so they want Tobey’s winnings back.

Keanu Reeves – “grown-up children’s book”

Keanu Reeves has developed a reputation in the media for being a bit glum and lonely.

In recent years, the notoriously private actor has suffered a series of personal tragedies including the deaths of his long-term girlfriend and baby daughter. Then last year, a picture taken of Reeves sitting alone on a bench eating a sandwich fuelled his lonely image and sparked a “Cheer up Keanu” campaign on Facebook.

Keanu Reeves has collaborated with Los Angeles artist Alexandra Grant for the book  entitled Ode to Happiness

The slim, handstitched book is a poem penned by Reeves, with a line on each page accompanied by simple blotted ink drawings by Los Angeles artist, Alexandra Grant.

“I thought it was fantastic,” says Reeves. “Holding it I just had this moment of looking at it and going ‘wow, if I’d like to have this, then other people would like to have this,’ so we tried to make it a work as a book.” Reeves is keen to stress that the poem is not a true reflection of his personal life, nor was it designed to counteract his media-created lonely image.

Mozilla launches Firefox 5

It is almost exactly a month since Mozilla released the beta version of Firefox 5 and the final version is now available for download. This is exactly when we were expecting Firefox 5 in Mozilla’s “rapid development release cycle”.

Mozilla said in its blog, “The latest version of Firefox includes more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements that make it easier to discover and use all of the innovative features in Firefox.”

The latest version of the popular web browser doesn’t bring any major differences in appearance, instead the improvements are mostly behind the scenes to improve performance, such as support for CSS animations and the inclusion of WebGL:  “This release adds support for more modern Web technologies that make it easier for developers to build amazing Firefox Add-ons, Web applications and websites.”

Firefox 5 replaces thus it’s predecessor  Firefox 4, which has had over 200 million downloads across Windows, Mac and Linux.

8.2 quadrillion calculations per second

The world’s most powerful computer is now at the Riken Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Japan

According to The New York Times, the computer, called “K,” is three times faster than the next fastest computer, a Chinese computer, Tianhe-1A, that previously held the highest spot. K, built by Fujitsu, can make 8.2 quadrillion calculations each second. “K” stands for “Kei,” meaning 10 quadrillion, or the number of calculations per second researchers hope K will one day be able to perform per second. K’s abilities are the equivalent of linking one million desktop computers.

K is made out of 672 computer racks, with 68,544 computer processing units (CPUs) but the lab plans to raise that number to 800 racks, a move that will make the machine even speedier and more powerful.
